When a man passes away during a period known as Panchak, considered inauspicious, his son declines to perform the traditional ritual meant to repel negative energies. Subsequently, his cousin’s wedding turns into a disaster, with malevolent spirits plaguing the family.

In Vedic astrology, Panchak, the final five days of the Hindu month Bhadrapada (August-September), is considered a time to avoid certain activities and rituals. During this period, when Tarun Nain (portrayed by Lakshvir Saran) loses his father, a pandit suggests burning five flour statues in the funeral pyre to prevent a curse. Enraged, Tarun rejects this practice and discards the animated statues. That night, he and his cousin Vikram (played by Vaibhav Tatwawadi) unintentionally bring the statues to their farmhouse. This leads to a chain of foreboding events that threaten the safety of the family and Vikram’s fiancée, Preeti Bharadwaj (Mukti Mohan).
Writer Shubho Shekhar Bhattacharjee and director Abhinav Pareek’s horror film presents an intriguing premise, infusing a distinctive twist into the genre. The first half of the film successfully cultivates suspense, delving into the ominous ambiance and the enigmatic aftermath of the disrupted ritual. Nevertheless, the story’s pace falters in the latter half, resulting in fragmented scenes. Although the film delivers atmospheric frights, they are sporadic and do not sustain the early captivation.
The screenplay leaves several questions unresolved, particularly regarding Tarun’s experiences that lead him to believe in the family’s curse. The narrative’s focus wavers between the enigma and the family interactions, which hinders the story’s continuity. The film’s 110-minute duration seems hurried, especially post-interval. An extended duration might have provided a more thorough examination of specific aspects of the plot. For example, the narrative’s attention shifts suddenly from the main couple and only revisits them towards the end.
Actors and their role in the movie “A Wedding Story”
Despite its flaws, the film showcases notable strengths. Pareek’s direction deserves praise, and Supratim Bhol’s cinematography shines, adeptly capturing the eerie ambiance with masterful camera work and lighting. Sucheeta Bhattacharjee’s musical score enhances the film’s mood, while Rahi Syed’s soundtrack is particularly memorable.
The performances are commendable, with Vaibhav Tatwawadi and Mukti Mohan showcasing a compelling chemistry as the lead pair. Despite having limited screen time, Lakshvir Saran leaves a notable impression. Nonetheless, the character development could be significantly improved.
“A Wedding Story” offers a solid viewing experience with its robust concept, engaging premise, and atmospheric visuals. However, a tighter narrative and a more fluid screenplay could have transformed it into an even more captivating and haunting journey.
